Beech

In the autumn produces beech nuts (called masts).   Keeps some of it dead leaves on the branches over winter.  Its wood is used to make furniture and in the past was used a lot to make the legs of chairs.

Native to the UK.

Ash

Has Black buds which are opposite on the twig.  Its leaves appear in May. 
Has very strong, tough wood which is used for handles of tools; such as axes

Sycamore

A type of Maple tree.  
Can live up to 200 years.  
In the autumn it has seeds like helicopters.  
It has green buds, which are opposite on the branch.
Not Native to Britain (comes from South east Europe).

Hazel

In the autumn produces Hazelnuts.  
It has many trunks.  
Has green buds and yellow catkins in the spring.  
Its wood is very bendy and made into fences etc.

Horse chestnut

In the autumn produces conkers.  
Has large brown sticky buds.  It is thought the name horse chestnut comes from the fact it used to be used in horse medicine.
Not native to Britain (was introduced from Turkey.

Oak

In the autumn produces acorns.  

Provides a habitat for over 400 species (more than any other tree in the UK).  

Oakwood is very strong and used to make furniture and famously the ships in the Battle of Trafalgar.


Native to Britain.
